Carter's Howe 7's Saturday 5th May 2012

Carters Howe 7's Saturday 5th May 2012 part of the Legacy Sevens Series.

With league rugby over for another season all eyes at Howe are focused on the Seven-a-side game. Once again Howe are one of the core teams in the Legacy Seven Series with the Tournaments this year increased to five, Stirling County, Sunday 22nd April, Boroughmuir, Friday 27th April, Howe of Fife Saturday 5th May, Hamilton Saturday 12th May and culminating at Glasgow City Sevens on Saturday 19th May, hosted by Cartha Queens Park. The ethos of the Legacy Sevens Series was to raise interest in Sevens Rugby in the run up to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014 and with the inclusion of an extra Tournament at Hamilton this year and two local Clubs reinstating their tournaments, Kirkcaldy on the 27th April and Perthshire on the 12th May, both of which a Howe 2nd Seven will attend, it seems to be having the desired affect. You can now follow the Legacy Series on facebook on:
https://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/Legacy7sSeries

The core teams this season are Howe of Fife, Cartha QP, Boroughmuir, Hamilton, Stirling County, Glasgow Hawks, Dundee HS, Stewart's Melville, Dalziel and Aberdeen Grammer FP, all of whom will attend the Carters Howe Sevens they will be joined by six local teams Madras FP, Dunfermline, Kirkcaldy, Perthshire, Greenock Wanderers and lastly, charity side Pigbarians. As JR Gray Trophy holders and Legacy Sevens runners up, the home side will relish the challenge of facing the mainly Premier League opposition. In the draw for the Boroughmuir tournament Howe will face Dalziel and Dundee HS in pool D with a chance of facing ether Stirling County, Hamilton or Cartha QP if they win their pool.

The Draw for the Carters Howe Sevens is:

Boroughmuir v Cartha QP, Glasgow Hawks v Perthshire, Aberdeen GSFP v Madras FP, Stirling County v Stewart's Melville, Howe of Fife v Kirkcaldy, Greenock Wanderers v Dunfermline, Hamilton v Pigbarians and Dundee HS v Dalziel. The first tie will take place at 1pm.

The Carters Howe Sevens will as usual include the Ferrier Cup Tournament for teams who are knocked out in the first round of the main competition and will take place on pitch 2 at 3pm. The U18's Tournament for the Drummond Cup will kick-off at 12 noon and will be played in two pools of four with the final taking place on the main pitch around 3pm. Pool A Kirkcaldy, Howe of Fife 1, Glenrothes and Boroughmuir. Pool B Dunfermline, Howe of Fife 2, Dundee Eagles and Greenock Wanderers.

With so much talent on view we hope to attract big local support at Duffus Park on Saturday 5th May. With admission only £5 and the usual refreshment available it promises to be a great day of Seven-a-side rugby.

HOWE TALENT DISPLAYED IN MADRID

Cameron and Murdo in Madrid

Photo above shows Cameron Fenton and Murdo McAndrew, two Howe of Fife lads, proudly wearing their Scotland Under 18 shirts, at the AER FIRA European Championships in Madrid.

Scotland played France, Portugal and Georgia in the tournament and whilst losing narrowly to France in an exciting opening game, Scotland won their last two remaining games against Portugal and a very physical Georgia side to finish fifth in the tournament overall.

Murdo McAndrew March 2012

Local Howe of Fife player Murdo McAndrew played last weekend for Scotland under 18s against Wales at Braidholm in Glasgow, home to GHA . The match was a tight affair with Scotland narrowly losing by 19 to 12 with Wales scoring in the last minute to clinch the win.

THE CLUB'S REPLY TO THE COURIER ARTICLE IN THIS WEEK'S PAPER

Dear Sir,

I refer to the article published in the Dundee Courier on Monday, 6th February reporting Cupar Community Council's support of Howe of Fife RFC's efforts to explore the possibility of it creating Clubhouse facilities at Duffus Park, Cupar.

The Club welcomes the Community Council's support of this venture, however, the comments in the article attributed to its Chairman, Canon Pat McInally, as regards the Club's financial integrity were wholly inaccurate. Howe of Fife RFC is not, and never has been, "...just about bankrupt..." as Canon McInally was quoted as saying. To the contrary, the finances of the Rugby Club are in robust health with its Clubhouse operation trading profitably. I am sure that neither Canon McInally, nor any of the members of the Community Council, would have intended to cast doubt on the Club's financial well being, but, that, unfortunately, is what the article has achieved. In these circumstances, it is important that the record be set straight in order to allay any unfounded concerns that may have been raised amongst both the Club's membership and the general public.

Over many years Howe of Fife RFC has built a deserved reputation as a force in developing Youth Rugby. The project currently under consideration is driven by the Club's ambition to build on that reputation and, ultimately, if possible, to provide improved facilities for all its members, but, in particular, the Youth of the Club. It is that objective that the Club would wish to see emphasised in any future articles on the project that might be considered by your newspaper.

Yours etc,

David J B Harley
President, Howe of Fife RFC
