The Howe Minis hosted their annual tournament on Sunday 4th May at Duffus Park, Cupar. With visiting teams from Madras, Ellon, Stew Mel Lions, Stirling County and Dunfermline attempting to claim the silverware.
Howe P4's played in their final tournament of the season at Duffus last Sunday. The boys got stuck in from the word go showing great tackling effort from everyone, which really made life difficult for opponents. Madras won comprehensively during the last outing between the teams winning 14-o and the Howe P4's were very keen to make amends. The boys played brilliantly during this match with huge commitment and support play to tackle and pass well. The final score of 3-3 was a fair result and set the tone for the afternoon. All players played well in the next matches, winning against Dunfermline, Ellon and Stirling County. IN the last tow matches in particular the lads had to work hard to overcome strong opponents. The lead changed hands a few times but the strong running of the Howe lads kept the scoreboard ticking over. The final match proved to be the crunch and while only 2-3 down at half time Howe’s eventually lost to a strong Stew Mel Lions team 2-6. Howe's top scorers were Fergus Fizpatrick and Fraser Allan while all of the team this week were tacklers of the tournament. Well done lads !

This was the best performance of the season by this young team who were disappointed to lose out to Stew Mel and Madras in the rankings however the smiles on their faces said it all when current Scotland cap Fergus Thomson awarded them the "Howe Team of the Tournament " for 2008 for their displays. This was well deserved and the coaches are proud of all the boys for their efforts in their first season - this bodes well for P5. where they will surely go from strength to strength. Thanks and good luck to Ewan who moves on to work with the incoming P3's from all of the P4 squad.
Howe P5's triumphed at Duffus Park on Sunday with a determined and impressive performance by the whole squad. After a frustratingly slow start, drawing with Madras, the boys moved up through gears with convincing wins against Ellon, Dunfermline and Stirling County before a crunch match with Stewarts Melville. Despite giving away a significant size advantage all the boys tackled their hearts out and scored some excellent tries to take the trophy. At the end of their second season this group of boys have once again reached six tournament finals, winning half of them, as they did in P4. A tremendous achievement of which the boys should be as proud of as their coaches and the parents."
The rain held off for what would be the P6's final and hardest tournament of the season. Against a strong Madras team they lost 3-0 but came bouncing back with convincing wins against Ellon and Dunfermline to raise team morale. The last 2 games saw both Stirling and Stewarts Melville edge the Howe boys out by a single try more through brawn than the open running rugby played by a determined Howe team. Congratulations to all players for the best performance of the season. P6 will continue to train on Wed evenings from 6.30 till 8. All boys are invited with any new players welcome.
Howe P7 team, in their last mini tournament, produced some excellent play in winning against Madras 5-0, Ellon 7-0, Dunfermline 5-1 and Stirling County 6-1. It all came down to the final match with Stewart Melville and unfortunately lost 2-0 to a very good side. The Howe team can be very proud of their play and commitment during the afternoon. Coaches and parents are extremely proud of the squad in quality of the rugby that the boys produced.

Since the start of tournaments in P4, this group of players have won 11 tournaments and been runner up in 9. It is a credit to the boys in how well they have done. The coaches and parents would like to congratulate all the boys, over the last 5 years. We are now looking forward to playing S1 rugby.(Photo in the Latest News section)

A big thank you to all parents who assisted on the day, donated items, sponsored the event and all who supported from the touchline. The boys who played some of the best rugby of the season and especially to the coaches who give up their free time each week to train the boys and deserve this well earned rest. Enjoy the summer and we look forward to seeing you all in August for the new season.

Connor's Special Day

Connor with Chris Paterson

Connor McGoey was recently lucky enough to be chosen as a Scotland Mascot at the Calcutta Cup match on the 8th of March. “I had a brilliant day being a mascot for Scotland. I was excited and nervous before I went on the pitch. It was the best feeling in the world standing in front of the rugby players singing the national anthem. I was standing in front of Graeme Morrison. I was really happy after the game because we got to go and meet the players to get their autographs and photos.”
