Howe 7s Results - Saturday 2nd May 2009

After the presentation of the Menzies Campbell Trophy by Sir Menzies Campell MP in recognition of the Clubs achievement of winning all 22 of their National League Division1 fixtures it was on to the business of the 51st Howe Sevens.

Having won the tournament last year the home side were defending the JR Gray Trophy and were desperate to emulate the the achievement of the Howe side of 1974/75 in winning back to back tournaments. The charity side, Pigbarians were in attendance to defend the Ferrier Cup, hoping to make it three wins in a row. New to this year's tournament was a Howe Exiles side, organised by Graham Thomson and made up of past Howe of Fife players. In the Under 18's tournament for the Drummond Cup the Howe youngsters, who have dominated their own Sevens for the past four years were confident of making it five out of five.

The tournament was kicked off by 2004 winners St Andews University who defeated Greenock Wanderers 29 - 24 after extra time. The results of the other first round ties were Perthshire 77 Montrose 0, Glasgow Accies 7 Kirkcaldy 64, Pigbarians 17 Howe Exiles 24, Hillfoots 19 Madras FP 12. With Howe of Fife, Dundee HS and Howe Presidents getting a bye into the next round. The second round results were Howe of Fife 62 St Andews University 5, Perthshire 19 Kirkcaldy 14 after extra time, Howe Presidents 7 Howe Exiles 34, Hillfoots 0 Dundee HS 59. The Howe of Fife were defeated 21 - 5 in the first Semi-Final by Perthshire and Dundee HS were 33 - 7 winners over Howe Exiles. The JR Gray Trophy was won by Dundee HS overcoming a strong Perthshire side 29 - 15. The JR Gray Trophy was presented to the winners by Jenny Gray.

The rest of the results were as follows:

Pigbarians Win The Ferrier Cup - 2007

PIG STEALS SHOW AT HOWE SEVENS

The winners of this year's Howe of Fife Annual Sevens were Dundee Rugby for the JR Gray Trophy who defeated last year's winners Kirkcaldy 52 - 19. The Ferrier Cup was won convincingly by the charity side Pigbarians who defeated Greenock Wanderers 23 - 0 with charity organiser and Coach Jim "the pig" Michie making a guest appearance in the final and scoring what he would describe as a weaving run from his own touch line to dive over between the posts. In reality he made a five yard dash to fall over the line, to much applause!! The Howe of Fife U18's won the Drummond Cup for the third time in a row, losing only one try on their way to the final, scoring a remarkable 118 points in the pool matches. They defeated Greenock Wanderers 59 - 7 in a great dispay of Sevens Rugby. It is worth noting that in both U18's and Senior competitions, four Howe sides made it to the semi-final stages.

Once again it was a great day of Sevens rugby, enjoyed by a large crowd and enhanced by the fine sunny weather. Thanks must go to the legions of helpers and the Sponsors who gave so generously of their time and money to make this another successful Howe of Fife Sevens Tournament.

You can vist Jim's website at www.jimthepig.com and find out about the fine work he and his Pigbarians are involved in.
