On Sunday, the Howe Harlequins kicked off their 2018 season with a visit to Kirkcaldy for the Local Derby. Due to the upcoming season changes, the Quins will only visit each team in the Tennants Division 1 once. Rain greeted the Quins at Beverage Park although the luscious grass of the well kept 1xv pitch would be where the opposing teams would meet.
Howe kicked off to Kirkcaldy and started what was to be a tough day at the office. Kirkcaldy used what they had learned from previous fixtures with the Quins and starved them of ball for all of the first half. Howe looked dangerous when they did get their hands on the ball with Emma Wood and the forwards driving down the pitch into Kirkcaldy’s half but silly mistakes would turn the ball back over to Kirkcaldy time after time. Pam Gibson probed the Kirkcaldy defence with some nice positional kicks but Kirkcaldy attacked Howe’s defence which resulted in two un converted tries in the first half.
More of the same came in the second half, Howe becoming more frustrated with the lack of playable ball. Kirkcaldy fed on this frustration and crossed the whitewash four more times punishing missed tackles and Howe’s mistakes.
When Howe finally got some decent possession they showed what they could do with the forwards thumping into the Kirkcaldy defence dragging bodies into the contact area. Pam Gibson used her pace to run into space and then kicked the ball on for Katie Williams to chase over the Kirkcaldy line and dot down for Howe’s only try. Megan Potter then converted.
Emma Mackinnon continued to defend forcefully all day with new Prop Nikaila showing strength and stability along with a rather evil tackle! A tough day at the office for the Quins but the players have shown that they have some flashes of brilliance up their sleeves. We look forward to the next game!
Kirkcaldy chose Kirsty Wilson as their Howe player of the day with the Quins recognising our own Rosanna Curtis as their player of the day.
Final Score, Kirkcaldy 32 Howe Harlequins 7
Our next match is against Ayr RFC on Sun 2nd September at 2pm at home.
