The Howe Harlequins welcomed Ayr Women to the Duffus Park for the first home game of the season with anticipation as the Quins had never met the ex Premiership side before. Howe were also introducing 5 new players to the Duffus Park, 1 home grown and 4 from their newly formed partnership with St Andrews University.
A slightly delayed start did not faze the Quins as they defended well when Ayr had the ball and attacked forcefully when possession came to the Quins. Unfortunately the Howe attack could not breach the Ayr defence in the first half but Ayr breached the Howe wing a few times to go into the second half 40-0 ahead.
After another early try, Howe Harlequins finally came to life with a storming drive up field with Phoebe Saunders planting the ball down. Howe 5-Ayr 47.
Megan Potter then puts a penalty kick over to score the last of Howe’s points for the afternoon. Howe 8, Ayr 47.
Ayr showed their class putting a couple of more tries on the board with a full time score Howe 8, Ayr 61.
Everyone within the Howe Harlequins setup are extremely proud of this rebuilding team. We showed some great touches with Pam Gibson’s boot, Emma Wood’s strong running and Emma Mackinnon’s hard defending and carrying particularly shining.
Ayr’s Choice of Quins Woman Of The Match was Emma Mackinnon. Howe chose Phoebe Saunders as theirs.
Next week we visit Greenock.
